Zohran Mamdani made history

Indian-origin leader Zohran Mamdani (34) has created history by winning the election for the mayor of New York City. He has become the first South Asian, Muslim and the youngest leader of the century to take charge of New York, known as the financial capital of the world. Zohran, the son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani, defeated former New York Governor and independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Saliva. Despite opposition from US President Donald Trump, Mamdani's historic victory is being seen as a return to progressive politics in the administrative functioning of the city with a population of more than 8.4 million. He has pledged to prioritize workers' issues and has made promises such as free childcare, free bus services and opening government grocery stores in New York. In his rousing victory speech, Mamdani cited a famous speech by former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1947, saying that New York was moving from “old to new.” “New York, you have given a mandate tonight for change and a new kind of politics. It is a mandate for a city we can afford to live in. Standing before you, I am reminded of Jawaharlal Nehru’s words: “There are times in history when we step from old to new. When an era ends and when the long-suppressed spirit of a nation finds freedom of expression.” He will be sworn in as New York’s 111th mayor in January. Mamdani, a current member of the Queens State Assembly, got more than 50 percent of the vote, while Cuomo, who is supported by Trump, got 40 percent and Saliwa got only 7 percent of the vote. Mamdani challenged Trump in his speech, who has started a strict action on immigration in his second term as president. He said that immigrants will run New York and now immigrants will lead it. Trump had repeatedly appealed to voters not to vote for Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist candidate. During Mamdani's speech, the song "Dhoom Macha Le" from the famous Hindi film "Dhoom" was playing in the background. Bollywood celebrities Shabana Azmi, Zoya Akhtar, Hansal Mehta, Sonam Kapoor, Ali Fazal and others congratulated Zohran Mamdani and his mother, filmmaker Mira Nair. -PTI

Senior Mamdani's Punjab connection
New Delhi (Aditi Tandon): Zohran Mamdani, who created history by becoming the mayor of New York, has family ties to Punjab. His father, renowned researcher Mahmood Mamdani, came to Punjab in 1970. His aim was to evaluate the results of 'The Khanna Study', the first major field study on birth control in India. It was led by experts from the Harvard School of Public Health with the help of Indian field officers. The study focused on the village of Manupur in Punjab. Its aim was to study the effectiveness of pills as a population control measure. Mamdani later proved in the report 'The Myth of Population Control' that this experiment was a failure. Mamdani said in the report that the people of the village were in favor of reducing the birth rate and contraceptives but they did not use them. His book stated that the main cause of poverty in developing countries is overpopulation and that its solution will be birth control. He said about the failure of ‘The Khanna Study’ that from an economic point of view, adopting a birth control program was disastrous for the villagers of Punjab. He reasoned, “In an agrarian economy, children, especially sons, are a great asset. Without them, a family may face starvation. With them, there is a possibility of prosperity.” The ‘Khanna Study’ program, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Government of India, ran from 1954 to 1960 and was followed up in 1969, covering seven villages with a population of 8,700. After two years, the birth rate in the test area had fallen to 13.2 per 1,000 children. During the same period, the rate in the control area had also fallen to 11 per 1,000.
