Canada-India relations will get back on track, Jaishankar hints after talking to Canada's new Foreign Minister Anita Anand

India-Canada relations are expected to improve. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Canada's new Foreign Minister Anita Anand held positive talks, the first since February 2024. The two discussed economic cooperation and strengthening India-Canada ties. Talks on a free trade agreement (FTA) are likely to resume. Jaishankar spoke to Canada's Foreign Minister Anita Anand over the phone.

The steady decline in India-Canada relations for almost two years has now started to stop and it is expected that efforts to normalize relations will start soon from both sides.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Canada's new Foreign Minister Anita Anand held a telephone conversation late Sunday night. The discussions are said to have been quite positive. This is the first time since February 2024 that the foreign ministers of the two countries have held talks.

The two foreign ministers discussed economic cooperation
After the recent elections in Canada, a new government has been formed under the leadership of Mark Carney. So far, there has been no anti-India rhetoric from the new government, as was the case during the tenure of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This is being seen in India as a change in the new government's attitude towards India.

The way the two foreign ministers discussed economic cooperation, it also seems that possibly talks on a free trade agreement (FTA) between the two governments may also resume.

Jaishankar's information on social media
After speaking to Anita Anand, Jaishankar wrote on social media, "I appreciate the conversation with the Canadian Foreign Minister. We discussed the future prospects of India-Canada relations. I wish him a successful tenure." After this, Foreign Minister Anand expressed his views on social media and said,

Thank you Foreign Minister S Jaishankar for strengthening India-Canada relations, advancing economic ties and very good discussions on shared priorities. I look forward to working with you in the future.

The way Anand has talked about economic cooperation is being considered very encouraging in India. In fact, before the deterioration in mutual relations in the year 2023, talks were underway between the two countries on FTA. Former Prime Minister Trudeau had accused Indian government agencies of killing Canada-based Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This led to a very strong reaction in India. Later, Canada leaked information to the media about the approval of the Indian top leadership for this killing.

However, till date, not a single piece of evidence has been presented by Canada. This resulted in both countries expelling each other's High Commissioners. The number of High Commissions was reduced. During Trudeau's tenure, pro-Khalistan groups in Canada were given a lot of freedom. Despite repeated protests from India, this was not stopped.

Open threats were also made to kill Indian diplomats. India says that Trudeau spoiled relations with India for his own political interests.

In such a situation, the FTA talks were postponed. Meanwhile, there was a change of power in the US and President Trump has started imposing several restrictions on economic relations with Canada. President Trump's statement about making Canada its 51st state has also been very unpleasant for Canada. In such a situation, the Canadian government is thinking of prioritizing economic relations with India.
