New Delhi: India's abstention from voting in the resolution passed in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Israel-Hamas dispute has not only increased the turmoil in domestic politics. Rather, there are fears that it will affect India's diplomatic relations with some countries. In such a situation, the officials of the Ministry of External Affairs have said that India stayed away from the voting while maintaining its old stand on the issue of terrorism. What is the reason behind India's abstention from voting? The lack of explicit condemnation of the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas in the specially-passed resolution is one of the reasons why India ultimately abstained from voting. Even during the discussion on the resolution, the Indian representative made it clear that terrorism cannot be justified in any way. What did the Ministry of External Affairs say? High-level sources associated with the Ministry of External Affairs have given detailed information about India's decision. He said, Terrorism cannot be justified in any way. The resolution passed did not contain any explicit condemnation of the October 7 Hamas attack. An amendment proposal was also presented to improve it. Then we voted in favor of it. It was supported by 88 countries, including India, but two-thirds of the members were required. Keeping all these issues in mind, India decided to stay away from the final proposal.
