Canada News: Preparations to appoint Jagmeet Singh as the head of Destination Canada

  Canada News: Jagmeet Singh, who was the president of Canada's New Democratic Party from 2017 to 2025, is at the top of the list of those to be appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Canada's tourism corporation, i.e. Destination Canada, and his name is expected to be announced in the coming days.

Although his selection is being questioned by some officials of the corporation due to his political background, his services as a lawyer take him far ahead of others. The annual package of the CEO of Destination Canada is about three and a half lakh dollars, that is, three and a half crore rupees.

Jagmeet Singh Dhaliwal's family is related to the family of Indian freedom fighter Sewa Singh Thikriwala. His father came to Canada and settled there about 5 decades ago. After entering politics from a lawyer, Jagmeet Singh became the president of the New Democratic Party in 2017. Then in 2019, he was elected as a two-term member of parliament from Burnaby, a city near Vancouver.

Under his leadership, some of the burning demands of the people were met from the government in exchange for support for Justin Trudeau's minority government. However, he had to step down from the presidency due to the party's poor performance in last year's parliamentary elections.

Destination Canada is a federal government corporation that encourages people to travel to Canada from around the world. Revenue from tourism is a major contributor to Canada's economy. 10 per cent of Canadian workers are directly or indirectly involved in tourism, and tourists spend $360 million a day here. Due to the recent FIFA Cup, tourism alone is expected to contribute four and a half billion dollars to Canada's gross domestic product this year, which accounts for 6 percent of Canada's GDP.
