Punjab tailor's son makes country proud: Weightlifter Lovepreet Singh wins silver medal at Commonwealth Games

  Commonwealth Games: Punjab's Lovepreet Singh, a resident of Bal Sachander village in Amritsar district, has won a silver medal in the men's 110+ kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Lovepreet lifted a total of 388 kg (176 kg in snatch and 212 kg in clean and jerk). This medal comes four years after he won a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Born in a humble family, Lovepreet's journey to the international level was not easy at all. His grandfather Gurmej Singh and uncle used to make a living by selling vegetables and every morning before leaving for training, the young athlete would go to the vegetable market at 5 am to help them unload vegetables. He would go for practice only after finishing work.

Lovepreet started weightlifting when he was in class eight. Inspired by the weightlifters in his village, he dreamed of making a name for himself in sports. The turning point came when a young man from Bal Sachdhar won a silver medal at the state level.

Lovepreet’s father, Kirpal Singh, who works as a tailor, recalls, “The entire village celebrated that achievement. Seeing the joy it brought, we wanted our son to participate in sports and build a better future. Lovepreet was equally motivated.”

Hard work soon paid off. While in class nine, Lovepreet won his first state-level medal, which gave him the confidence to take up the sport seriously.
