India has officially launched its campaign for a non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar launched it at the UN headquarters in New York. The External Affairs Minister said that India will prioritize important issues like open, fair and rules-based maritime security, protection of seafarers and prevention of terrorism financing in the Security Council. Citing rising tensions in West Asia and attacks on commercial vessels, he said that compliance with international law is essential to keep maritime trade safe. He stressed the need to cut off its financial sources to eliminate terrorism. India's approach is based on the principle of 'peace', under which being a voice of the Global South and dealing with the threats of Artificial Intelligence (AI) are key priorities. It is worth mentioning that India has been a non-permanent member of the Security Council eight times so far. In the elections to be held in June next year, India will compete with Tajikistan for the only seat in the Asia-Pacific region.
