Pro-Putin Party Retains Dominance in Russian Parliament

  The United Russia party, backed by President Vladimir Putin, has retained its majority in the country's parliament following the first parliamentary elections held in Russia since the start of the war with Ukraine. Officials provided this information.

According to the Central Election Commission, results from over 95 percent of polling stations show that United Russia secured approximately 58 percent of the vote for the 225 parliamentary seats filled via party lists.

Notably, most opposition candidates did not participate in the election, allowing the government to maintain its firm grip on power.

Additionally, another 225 members of parliament were elected through direct contests in individual constituencies; United Russia candidates are leading in 208 of these seats. Ella Pamfilova, head of the Central Election Commission, stated that preliminary results indicate 'United Russia' will secure 355 out of the 450 seats.

For the first time, this election included residents from four Ukrainian regions that Moscow had illegally annexed following the outbreak of the war. However, Russia does not yet exercise full control over these areas. Voting also took place in the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia had illegally seized in 2014. Ukraine has declared the voting in these regions illegal.

Last month, the Russian Supreme Court excluded the Yabloko Party—the only registered political party to publicly criticize the war—from the electoral process. Only a few dozen candidates from this party were contesting elections in single-member constituencies. Furthermore, some anti-war leaders were imprisoned before the election campaign or were forced to leave the country.
