Digital arrest: Impersonating Justice Chandrachud, Rs 3.71 crore transferred from woman, one arrested

A 68-year-old woman from Mumbai has been duped of Rs 3.71 crore in a digital arrest scam. A person has been arrested from Gujarat in this case. A police officer said on Monday that cyber criminals impersonated employees of Colaba police station in south Mumbai as well as officials of central agencies to dupe the victim. They also held a fake online court hearing, in which one of the people identified himself as Justice Chandrachud.

“The victim, who lives in Andheri West, was kept under constant surveillance by the fraudsters, who claimed that she was under digital arrest in a money laundering case. The crime took place between August 18 and October 13 this year.”

The woman received a call on August 18 from a person who claimed to be speaking from Colaba police station and that her bank account was being used for money laundering, the official said.
