Canada is going to make the law tougher for criminals - Ruby Sahota, Shaun Fraser

“This fall, our government will introduce new legislation to tighten bail and sentencing guidelines for violent offenders,” said Federal Minister Ruby Sahota. “Canadians deserve to feel safe in their homes and in their communities. That’s why we’re working to protect families, support law enforcement, and keep dangerous criminals off our streets.”

Justice Minister Shaun Fraser also said, “Fixing the bail system will require work from all levels of government. As the federal government, we are responsible for the criminal code. While the law already says that offenders who pose a danger to the public and/or are a flight risk should be denied bail, we know there’s more to do. That’s why we’re introducing legislation this fall to tighten bail and sentencing guidelines.

But for these changes to have a meaningful impact, provinces also need to do their part. The states are responsible for running bail courts, prisons and Crown prosecutors’ offices. They need to ensure they have adequate funding so that there is space in prisons and Crown prosecutors have the resources to fight bail hearings.

Let me be clear: Under the leadership of Mark Carney, the federal government is ready to work with the states to close the gap and ensure that our criminal justice system works properly.

Violent criminals should be behind bars. People should feel safe in their homes.
