Axiom-4 Mission: 'Honored to have the opportunity...': Indian astronaut Subhanshu Shukla's first message sent from ISS

Indian astronaut Subhanshu Shukla, who made history by becoming the first Indian to step foot on the International Space Station (ISS) and the second Indian in space, shared his first reactions after reaching orbit. Speaking in Hindi during a live chat, he described his initial feelings in microgravity and the warm welcome he received from the ISS crew.

He said, “I have arrived safely. It feels easy to stand here, but it is a bit difficult. My head is heavy, but we will get used to it in a few days. I am very excited to experiment.”

Shukla stressed how humbled he was to see the Earth from such a unique perspective. “The moment I entered the International Space Station, this crew made me feel very welcome. You really opened the doors of your home to us. It was wonderful. I am very confident that the next 14 days are going to be amazing, advancing science and exploration, and working together,” he added.

Warm welcome aboard

Shukla is part of Axiom Mission 4 (X-4), which launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on June 25 at 2:31 am IST aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The crew includes mission commander and former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, Polish astronaut Sławoś Wojniewski (ESA), and Hungarian researcher Tibor Kapu. Upon arrival at the ISS, they were greeted with hugs and smiles by the Expedition-73 crew already on board.
