New Delhi: Trinamool Congress suffered another big setback on Thursday, party's Rajya Sabha member Prakash Chik Baraik resigned from the Rajya Sabha. This move by Prakash Chik Baraik comes soon after the resignations of senior leaders Sukhendu Shekhar Rai and Sushmita Dev. The problems for the Mamata Banerjee-led party do not seem to end here. Within the next one week, at least three more TMC Rajya Sabha members may submit their resignations. If this happens, the ongoing crisis within the party may deepen considerably. Resignation submitted to the Chairman In his resignation submitted to Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan, Baraik said that he is leaving the membership of the House with immediate effect. In the letter, he wrote, "I hereby resign from the membership of the Rajya Sabha. Please accept it with immediate effect." He also thanked the Chairman and the Secretariat for their support during his tenure. The letter further said, "I express my heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency, the Hon'ble Deputy Chairman and all the officers of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat who extended their full support and cooperation during my tenure as a Rajya Sabha member." The development comes amid intensifying internal strife within the Trinamool Congress. The continuous resignations and claims by rebel leaders have created uncertainty about the party's unity and any possible uniqueness. Rebel faction denies merger speculation in Congress Rebel TMC leader Ritabrat Banerjee on Wednesday categorically dismissed speculations of any merger between the rebel faction and the Congress. He said that the current developments are entirely an internal matter of the organisation. According to ANI, Banerjee claimed that the support of her faction has increased from 58 to 64 MLAs. "Currently, the number is 64. These people will come and submit a letter to the Speaker," she said. She said that the faction will soon formally approach the West Bengal Assembly Speaker to strengthen its position. Dismissing speculations of a merger, she clarified, "As far as a merger is concerned, our legislature party is definitely not joining the Congress. Even more than two-thirds of the MPs in Parliament are not merging with the Congress." Banerjee said that no section of the party—be it MPs, municipal corporation representatives, Zilla Parishad members or Panchayat members—is moving towards a merger. He said, "Who is merging with whom? There is no question of merger."
