Nepal-Tibet floods: Chinese official warns of more glacier collapses, chain of disasters

  A senior Chinese climate official has warned that more glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau are likely to destabilize, leading to more disasters like the recent flash floods on the Tibet-Nepal border.

Flash floods caused by avalanches near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26 have devastated towns and villages in northern and central Nepal, killing hundreds.

“In the past 60 years, the glacier area on the Tibetan Plateau has shrunk by about 24 percent and about 7,000 small glaciers have completely disappeared,” said Gao Rong, deputy director of the National Center for Climate Change, an official Chinese government agency.

According to Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, Gao said that the structural stability of glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau will further decrease in the future, which may lead to more glacier-related disasters and their gradual impact may increase the scale of the disaster and the affected area.

Meanwhile, according to data released by Chinese authorities on Wednesday, 21 people died and 541 people are missing in last week's flash flood at Tibet's Gyarong Port, which borders Nepal. The state news agency 'Xinhua' quoted a Tibetan official as saying that according to data released on August 30, 261 foreigners are among the missing, including 49 people from India and 22 other countries.

On the other hand, in Nepal, the death toll rose to 1,252 on Thursday after more bodies were found in the affected areas.
