Two Sikhs of Jalandhar origin have made a big name for themselves in UK political circles. Kulwinder Singh Johal (56), from Taheng village in Phillaur, has become the first turbaned Sikh mayor of Leicester. In another important development in UK politics, Preet Kaur Gill (53), from Jamsher village in Jalandhar, has been appointed as the Junior Health Minister in the Keir Starmer government’s cabinet reshuffle. Both these achievements have caused a wave of joy among the locals here and the Punjabi community living around the world. Johal has also proudly told everyone about his roots (background) in Jalandhar. Johal said, "After coming from Pakistan during the partition days, my parents and grandparents first settled in Talwan village in Jalandhar. Later they moved to village Tehang. I was only six years old when my family brought me to the UK. My childhood here was very good and enjoyable. Going to the Gurdwara Sahib every Sunday was a firm habit of ours." Johal worked in a factory in the UK for 25 years. Along with this, he was busy with social work and also promoted a football club at the local level. He recalled, "I was the general secretary of Gurdwara Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Leicester in 2002. Queen Elizabeth visited there during her Golden Jubilee visit to the UK. That visit received very good coverage in the media." On being elected as mayor, he said, "I am grateful to my fellow councillors who have shown faith in me and elected me as the first citizen (mayor) of Leicester. Also, I firmly believe that such positions come in a person's life only when God wills it." When Johal took office, his wife Manjit Kaur Johal, daughter Gursimran Kaur and son Aishvir Singh Johal were also present with him. On the other hand, Preet Kaur Gill also started her political career in 2012 as a councillor of the Labour Party. She has served as a councillor in Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council. In the 2017 general election, Gill was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Birmingham Edgbaston. She then became the first British Sikh woman MP in the history of the UK. She was re-elected in the 2019 and 2024 general elections. On her new appointment, she wrote on her social media that every new role brings with it many great responsibilities.
