The Canadian government has passed new legislation to tighten asylum rules. Bill C-12, known as the Strengthening Canada's Immigration System and Borders Act, received royal assent on March 26 and is now in effect. According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the legislation adds new rules to asylum claims, makes the claims process easier and faster, allows for more information sharing between government departments, and gives the government more authority over immigration documents and applications. Indian citizens are currently the largest group of asylum seekers in Canada. In the last six months of 2025, about 9,770 refugee claims were filed by Indian citizens, more than any other country. India has surpassed countries like Mexico and Haiti in the number of these claims. Most of these claims come from regions like Punjab, often linked to political or security concerns.
