Washington: Speaker Kevin McCarthy faced defeat in the voting in the House of Representatives of the United States on Tuesday. His leadership in the Republican-dominated House was caught in a crisis when a small faction of the party joined hands with the Democratic Party. This is the first time in American history that a speaker has been removed by a vote. Some MPs are believed to have resented McCarthy's support for the government in resolving the federal shutdown crisis. 216 members of Congress voted against McCarthy and 210 in favor. Eight Republican lawmakers, led by Matt Gaetz, voted against McCarthy along with Democrats. Patrick McHenry has been named Interim Speaker. Matt Gaetz told reporters shortly after the vote that the reason McCarthy went down today is because nobody trusts him. On the other hand, Vivek Ramaswamy, the 2024 presidential contender from the Republican Party, said that anarchy is not a bad thing but the resulting anarchy is positive. Meanwhile, Interim Speaker Patrick McHenry has asked former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to vacate her office in Parliament House.
