Women's Hockey: A Golden Goal for the Women's Team

India ended a 44-year wait today by winning the gold medal in women's hockey at the Asian Games. By defeating China 1-0 in the title match, India has secured its spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The Indian team displayed a magnificent performance in the final against the defending champions and Olympic silver medalists, China. A 'reverse-stick' goal scored by Lalremsiami in the 10th minute, along with the stellar performance and solid defense of goalkeeper Bichu Devi, played a pivotal role in India's victory. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated the Indian team on this historic win. China threw everything into the match, but India bravely thwarted the opposition's relentless attacks to maintain their one-goal lead, putting in a spirited performance—without regard for physical toll—to secure a memorable victory. This marks the Indian women's hockey team's first Asian Games gold medal since 1982. The team had previously reached the finals in 1998 and 2018 but had to settle for silver after losing to South Korea and Japan, respectively. For team coach Sjoerd Marijne, both objectives—winning the gold medal and securing an Olympic berth—were crucial.

Earlier, the title clash was delayed by an hour because the buses carrying the players from both teams (India and China) got stuck in traffic. In the tenth minute of the match, Lalremsiami—playing her 200th international game—converted a pass from Sakshi Rana into a goal to give India the lead, a lead they maintained until the end. China had a chance to equalize via a penalty stroke in the second quarter (24th minute), but Bichu Devi made a crucial save by diving to the left, preserving India's advantage. Indian defenders put up a valiant effort to protect the goal, with Navneet making a vital save on the goal-line to deny China an equalizer. Although the Chinese team dominated the early stages of the match, India's solid defense made it difficult for them to create clear-cut chances. China won the silver medal, while Japan secured the bronze by defeating Korea in a shootout.
