Columbia University bows to Trump administration, gives $220 million

Columbia University in the US has finally bowed down to the Trump administration. It has reached an agreement with the administration to restore federal funding, under which it will pay more than $220 million (about Rs. 1900 crore) to the federal government. The university announced this on Wednesday. The administration had stopped funding to the university in the name of failure to deal with anti-Semitic sentiment. The White House said that the university will pay $200 million over three years to settle the matter under the agreement. It will also pay $21 million to settle an investigation launched by the US Employment Opportunity Commission. This investigation was ongoing into alleged violations of the civil rights of Jewish employees after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The university's executive chairwoman Claire Shipman said that the agreement is an important step after a long period of federal investigation and institutional uncertainty. The university was threatened with billions of dollars in damages, including a $400 million grant that was withheld this year. The 270-year-old university is among the first American universities to be targeted by President Donald Trump over pro-Palestinian protests on its campuses. A Columbia University task force also found last year that Jewish neighborhoods had suffered abuse during the protests.
