Amarnath Yatra postponed, both Baltal and Pahalgam routes closed; Know when pilgrims will be able to have darshan

Amarnath Yatra suspended: Officials said the Amarnath Yatra was suspended on Thursday due to heavy rains in the valley for the last 36 hours. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for more heavy rains in some parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The alert comes a day after a landslide on the Baltal route of the yatra in Ganderbal district killed a woman pilgrim and injured three others. Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Vijay Kumar Bhiduri said, "The Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra from Pahalgam and Baltal base camps has been suspended till July 17. Due to continuous heavy rains for the last two days, it has become necessary to carry out track repair work on both the routes." He said, "However, pilgrims who were stopped at Panjtami Camp last night are being allowed to go to Baltal with adequate deployment of BRO and hill rescue teams."

Yatra to resume tomorrow

Bhiduri said that the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has deployed a large number of men and machines on the tracks to complete the work so that the yatra can resume from the Baltal and Pahalgam base camps. "There is every possibility that the yatra will resume tomorrow (Friday) depending on the weather conditions of the day," he said.

Another official said that a two-day weather advisory has warned of heavy rain in Jammu and Kashmir, including the yatra routes in Kashmir. Let us tell you that this is the first time this year that the yatra from Jammu has been postponed.

Last year, more than 5 lakh pilgrims had performed the yatra

Since the yatra began on July 3, 2.47 lakh pilgrims have visited the 3,880-metre-high temple so far. A total of 1,01,553 pilgrims have left Jammu base camp for the valley since the first batch was flagged off by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on July 2.

So far, over 4 lakh people have registered online for the yatra. Last year, over 5.10 lakh pilgrims visited the cave shrine, which houses a naturally formed ice Shivling.
