For the first time in Australia, Indian-origin Senator Varun Ghosh took the oath by placing his hand on the Bhagavad Gita.

  Indian-origin lawyer Varun Ghosh on Tuesday became the first member of the Australian Parliament to take the oath by laying hands on the Bhagavad Gita. Varun Ghosh has been appointed as the new senator from Western Australia and the Legislative Council has elected him to represent the Australian state in the Senate of the Federal Parliament. He was born in 1985 in India.

Varun Ghosh is a lawyer in Perth. He earned a degree in Arts and Law from the University of Western Australia. He is a Commonwealth Scholar in Law at the University of Cambridge. He has worked as a financial lawyer in New York and as a consultant for the World Bank in Washington. His political journey began after joining the Labor Party in Perth. On his swearing in, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong welcomed him and said that it is wonderful to have you in the Labor Senate team.
