  Speaking at the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand stated that Canada advocates for strategic autonomy on the global stage and that her government is focusing its efforts on this very policy. She emphasized that curbing the pressure exerted by major powers is essential and a pressing need of the times. Elaborating on this, Anita Anand said that Canada envisions a scenario where—in light of shifting global dynamics—middle-power nations do not remain dependent on any single major power in critical sectors such as defense, energy, trade, and technology; instead, these nations should unite to strengthen their collective global role. Without naming any specific country, she expressed concern that major powers—while themselves retreating from global economic cooperation—are actively sowing discord to undermine the economic unity and solidarity of various nations, thereby weakening the mutual economic interdependence and shared economies established among mid-sized countries. Speaking from the United Nations podium—framed by its distinctive green marble—Canada's Foreign Minister noted that at a time when long-standing global economic and other ties are fracturing, Canada has recognized the pulse of the times and taken the initiative to mobilize nations that had previously looked to major powers; this effort is already yielding tangible results. She asserted that many countries have grasped this reality and have begun efforts to adapt themselves to this new context. Anita Anand's speech is being viewed as a commitment to the efforts initiated by Prime Minister Mark Carney last year.
