E20: Government scraps plan to blend ethanol in diesel

  The Centre on Monday decided to scrap the plan to blend ethanol in diesel after testing, as it was found that blending ethanol significantly reduces the flash point of diesel. Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi told the Rajya Sabha that public sector oil marketing companies, in collaboration with authorised laboratories and vehicle manufacturers, tested ethanol-diesel blends through their research and development centres. “It was observed that the ethanol blended diesel was not meeting the flash point as its flash point was significantly reduced due to the presence of ethanol,” he said. Low flash point increases fire and safety risks as it increases the chances of fuel catching fire during handling, storage and transportation. As a result, the government has banned blending ethanol in diesel. In response to a separate question, Gopi further said that no decision has been taken yet on increasing the ethanol content in petrol beyond 20 per cent. Suresh Gopi stressed, “So far, no decision has been taken by the government to increase the ethanol content in petrol beyond 20 per cent. Any future decision on higher ethanol blends will be taken only after detailed scientific and technical studies and consultation with all relevant stakeholders including vehicle manufacturers, oil marketing companies and research institutes.”
