Surrey, a city on the west coast of Canada with a majority Sikh population, held its annual Baisakhi Nagar Kirtan, known as the Baisakhi Parade, which began in 1999. Lakhs of devotees from far and wide participated in it. Although the pre-determined route of the Nagar Kirtan was short, the entire city was imbued with Gurbani and Sikh heritage. Political and religious leaders also participated with great enthusiasm and addressed the people in their own way. The City of Surrey staff and police took care of the arrangements and security. It is considered the largest Nagar Kirtan outside Punjab in terms of the number of devotees, with more than 6 lakh people attending. The Nagar Kirtan is organized every year by Gurdwara Sahib Dashmesh Darbar. The Nagar Kirtan, which started from Gurdwara Sahib at around 9 am under the leadership of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in a highly decorated vehicle, was greeted by the military personnel and welcomed with military tunes. The Nagar Kirtan passed through 128th Street, 82nd Avenue, 124th Street, 76th Avenue and returned to Gurdwara Sahib by evening. All along the way, devotees had different types of dishes, fruit langars and cold sweet water chabils. It was special that Sikh devotees as well as people of many other religions also participated in the Nagar Kirtan and the importance of Baisakhi was heard and understood.
