Republicans in the US Senate have voted to reject a resolution to halt President Donald Trump’s war on Iran. Republicans have openly supported Trump, even though the US has no clear exit strategy from the rapidly escalating conflict in the Middle East. The bill, known as the “War Powers Resolution,” passed 53-47. The vote was largely along party lines, although Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky voted in favor of the resolution and Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voted against it. The resolution gave lawmakers the opportunity to seek congressional approval before any further attacks. The vote forced US lawmakers to take a stand on a war that could cost American troops, countless other lives and shape the future of the region. Democratic senators, realizing the seriousness of the issue, remained present in the Senate chamber in large numbers and sat at their desks as voting began. Senators usually come to the chamber to vote and leave after casting their votes.
