Trade deal possible for big change: Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar today said that the early conclusion of the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union (EU) is a major step towards making the global economy sustainable and strengthening democratic forces. He said this after meeting a high-level trade delegation from the 27-nation European Union. The seven-member delegation is in India to finalise the long-awaited free trade agreement between the two sides. “There was a discussion on how India and the European Union can further enhance coordination and strengthen cooperation. This can stabilize the global economy and strengthen democratic forces,” Jaishankar said. Jaishankar’s comments came at a time when both sides are trying to conclude talks on a major trade deal. In September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen committed to finalizing the trade agreement by December.
